Edmonton – the heart of Alberta

Sightseeing, Tours, Attractions and Things to do in Sydney

on the way to Edmonton from Banff  being close to nature

It’s a wonderful trip from Banff to Edmonton via Jasper and Columbia Glacier. By the way, you can stop there and have a tour or experience Glacier Skywalk, or just drive straight to Edmonton, making some stops at Tim Hortons or other small cafés in cosy Canadian towns. Enjoy the trip! We even saw some moose!

However, if you choose to travel that way north via Jasper, and not east via Calgary, it will take you a bit more than 8 hours. But this is the idea behind road trips, right?

When approaching Edmonton, make sure you have a good, detailed map over the city! The streets there are alligned in a crazy order, and it’s difficult to figure out the right away, especially after a long road trip. Our street started before the river and continued after the bridge on the other side of the river…

However, when found, the hotel was just perfect! Metterra-on-the-Whyte Hotel! Highly recommended! Huge rooms, with sink, bathrobes, free (valet! – though not recommended when you have a rental car) parking, free wine afternoon snack, breakfast included, comfy beds, modern design and friendly staff.

Edmonton is the capital of the province of Alberta, and this is the richest city in Canada – oil!

We arrived in Edmonton very late and went to this pub called the Next Act which was very close to the hotel (which ws very convenient because we were exhausted!) and where they served delicious burgers and tapped local beer till early morning! Great food and beer! Though the music a bit too loud for me…

We had a day in Edmonton where we met some friends and they took us around, but we saw the city only from the car, about which I regret because I read about many great and interesting places to visit, like this square with food trucks or various parks and bridges of Edmonton… Maybe next time..

The following day we left for Calgary, having visited this great organic supermarket that was near our hotel  and the biggest shopping mall in North America – WEM (West Edmonton Mall)! A great entertainment for the whole family: skating rink, sea world, aquapark, shopping, restaurants, movie theater, you name it…

West Edmonton Mall   WEM

We do love American Eagle brand, Cinnabon; the ice cream at Marble Slab Creamery was quite good, but expensive; we enjoyed the sea lion show (a pity that only children could take a picture with those cuties..), we had our lunch at Famoso Neapolitan Pizzeria where they served stone-baked pizza which was quite tasty…

And we headed to Calgary, our final stop on the west coast

Have you been to Edmonton?
